Free online workshop session
Language and Communication is an additional module that can be attended as a follow on to our online series (Disability Awareness in the Workplace) or as a stand-alone module.
This practical online training workshop supports delegates to overcome language or communication barriers they may experience when working with disabled colleagues or customers, and how to initiate a more “comfortable” conversation.
Designed for Managers and anyone involved in a customer service role, this tutor-led interactive, informative (and fun!) session is delivered by experienced trainers who have worked in the field of disability for over twenty years combined.
The workshop will cover:
- The benefits of employing someone with additional needs – an introduction to a positive view of disability and employment and the benefits for business.
- Language – an insight into the importance of language, disability language and etiquette and ‘what language should we use?’. Delegates will have the opportunity to consider terms and phrases and their uses in contemporary society.
- Communication – How can you help as a colleague or manager? Includes a review of ‘how’ we speak and give instruction, our working environment and planning effectively.
- Hints and Tips – Helpful suggestions to consider when interacting with colleagues and customers.
Delegates will complete the course with a certificate and learning pack.

Please Note: Due to the funding we receive from DWP, Devon County Council and Learn Devon, all Be Ready Employer Hub services are available free of charge for Devon-based employers. However, we recognise that managers and customer service specialists from other areas may also wish to attend. Therefore, we will prioritise places on all our open online courses for participants based in Devon, with bookings from other areas held on a waiting list. We will then either confirm available places for anyone on the waiting list a week before the start of the session, or offer a waiting-list place on an alternative series.
